In celebration of a recent family birthday think this weeks freebie should be a fun filled OCA Charm Pack.  This Oilcloth Addict Specialty Cut was first created last year when we made a fun birthday sign out of oilcloth scraps, one idea ran into another and our version of a charm pack was created.  

In the last year we have presented a few fun tutorials that would be ideal for the charm pack.  So for today entry question we ask, what is your favorite...

Pantry Project #5, Chalk Cloth tags and labels

These simple Chalk Cloth tags and labels can be used all over the house, I need these for the pantry/laundry room to get that place organized once and for all.

Stuff you need:

Chalk Cloth Fat Quarter
Oilcloth Fat Quarter Four Pack or a Oilcloth Charm Pack
scissors
spool of ribbon
ink pin and white pencil
vase or template for oval shape
Fray Check


step 1. Find a shape, you could use a template if you have on but I always use what I have laying around. While I was looking around the house for an oval shape and I got lucky! What is so great about it is that the top is bigger than the bottom. How perfect is that? (Thanks Janet, your gifts keep giving!)



Don't have that kind of luck? No problem, find your shape and increase or decrease it on the printer. Easy-peasy!










step 2. Cut your large ovals out of oilcloth and your small ovals out of the chalk cloth.






step 3. Cut your ribbon into 20" strips. Fold the ribbon in half and place it in the center of the tag and sandwich them in-between the two layers. Use cloths pins to pin the tag. Make sure your ribbon in a V shape, this will help you tie your label later. Don't forget to use some fray check on the ends of the ribbon to keep them tidy.


step 4. Set your needle to the left so you can edge stitch the chalk cloth on to the oilcloth. Slowly sew around the chalk cloth tag.


step 5. Make a few without the ties and you can hot glue them onto all sorts of things.

OCA Tutorial # 4 Oilcloth Memory Game by April

Oilcloth Memory Game Tutorial

Little ones will love playing this memory game, while their adults will love the durability that oilcloth provides to this classic. This 3 inch set was made for a young toddler. If you are making this game for an older child you may chose to make the pieces smaller.


Materials:
1 Oilcloth Addict Charm Pack
1 Fat Quarter of Oilcloth from Oilcloth Addict
Cutting board
Rotary Cutter
Pinking Shears


Begin by choosing ten different oilcloth charms from the charm pack. Each one of of these will form one pair of memory pieces.

Using your rotary cutter and ruler trim the charm into a 6 by 3 rectangle. Then cut the piece in half, forming two 3 by 3 squares. Repeat these steps with each charm. When you have finished this there will be 20 3 by 3 pieces, (2 from each of your original 10 charms).

Now you will need 20 3 x 3 squares from your fat quarter fabric.
Begin by cutting a 3 inch wide strip the length of your fabric.

Then cut this piece every three inches to form your 3 x 3 squares.

Next, put a black dot with each one of your charm pieces with the
wrong sides of the fabric touching. Pin in place.

Sew 1/4 inch in around your square, backstitching at the beginning and end.

After sewing all of the pieces, use pinking sheers to even out the
edges and give a decorative touch.

Use what you have? OK! What I have are scraps of oilcloth--lots and lots of scraps.

The other day I needed a birthday sign for my cute Hubby's birthday, so I grabbed a handful of oilcloth scraps and I cut this sign. I just taped it straight to the wall, but I recommend you use that gummy non-marking stick-up stuff.

While I was making my masterpiece I realized that I had something fun going on! I started thinking about charm packs, the ones that I admire at the quilt shop and I how great it would be to have an oilcloth charm pack. But instead of 5 inch squares, I think that 4x6 inch rectangles will be best for the OILCLOTH ADDICT charm pack (better for letters at least).

When I made mine, I just cut it right out, willy-nilly, cuz I am like that. But, you can print out your saying in your favorite font, trace it onto the back and get cutting. Go to town, the possibilities are endless. Please remember when marking your letters on the wrong side of the oilcloth you need reverse your letters.

So go ahead, get to it... be creative today!
