Custom Chalk Cloth Table Topper

Last week I made myself a last minute Chalk Cloth Table Topper for our Thanksgiving table, now, this is different then my Modern June Table Topper because this one is made to fit the entire top of my dinner room table.  I don't know what was better how easy the project was to do or how much fun was had at our Thanksgiving Dinner.  Let me tell you, even the In-Laws loosen up and joined in on the coloring fun!  Sweet!

What ya gotta have:

• a length of Chalk Cloth a bit longer than you table
• a good pair of scissors
• some double stick tape
• white pencil 
• a random book or box 

Step one:  Roll out your chalk cloth and line it up on your table.

You don't want it sliding around, so use some double stick tape to keep in place.

Step two:  Since you are going to be marking the bottom of the oilcloth from the underside you will want to use a box or book as a hard surface to draw against.

Step three:  mark the shape of the entire table.

 

Step four:  Cut it up!

Step five:  Use double stick tape to adhere topper to table.

DISCLAIMER... Please make sure this doesn't hurt your table top, try

this out in a unseen spot before doing this on the top of your table.

 Step six:  Now that your all cut to size, set the table, grab some chalk

and invite your friends over for a great time!

Great Idea for Laminated Cotton-Reusable Gift Bags

I just found this wonderful Reusable Gift Bag tutorial from Firefly Hill Designs via Craft Gossip, how cute would this be made out of the new Amy Butler laminates?  When I saw it I thought it would very fun for snacks as well as gift giving, heck, I am thinking holiday gift snacks bags might be a lot of fun! 

A note on PUL and Food Safety:  From everything I have read PUL--this laminated cotton--is most likely food safe since it doesn't contain PVC or BPA.  At this time the manufacturers do not have FDA approval, it is some peoples opinion that this is in the works.  This is great news for the young family and mother earth.  Now remember, I am not an scientist and I don't work with FDA so take this with a grain of salt, please do you own research if you have any concerns.    


A NOTE ON THE SAFTEY OF OILCLOTH:  Please note that the recent Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA) prohibits oilcloth garments such as bibs and aprons or toys for children While there are no heavy metals in oilcloth, it may not be suited for Snack Bags and Sandwich Wraps especially for children.  I suggest using the more family friendly Laminated Cottons.  

New! Amy Butler Laminated Cotton!

About a month ago, I saw the new Amy Butler fabric line, called Love--it was featured on True Up.  I fell in LOVE right away. The photo of the Love Raincoat made me melt, it's to die for, right? Along with all the regular cotton fabrics, they now have a 100% Cotton that is Laminated. Yes, that's right we are talking oilcloth people. This isn't your Grandma's oilcloth or our beloved Mexican Oilcloth, it's a more supple oilcloth, and it gathers and drapes like a dream! Did I mention that it feels like butter?

Shortly after learning about the new line I was contacted by Amy Butler Designs, asking if they could use our Oilcloth Addict tips for promoting their new oilcloth. You know I said "Yes." What an honor to be recognized by such a prestigious company. Ever since, I have been aching to get some Love for the shop.

What pleases me the most, is that this laminated cotton is PUL, which means it is PVC free!!!  I am so happy that my shipment of the first printing has arrived. I look forward to making lots of goodies to share with you all here on Oilcloth Addict.
