We are looking for two quick-thinking, energetic Junies to help us out, a Stitcher and a Cutter. If you are interested in one (or both!) please contact me, Kelly McCants at kelly@modernjune.com.

Modern June is centrally located on the North-side of Richmond, VA, near 195, HWY 64 and I-95.

Position #1: Sewing Contractor

We need a smart, well organized, go-getter to manage the cutting and sewing of our custom oilcloth and laminated cotton tablecloths. Basic patterning skills required, and seasoned sewing skills a must. Experience with oilcloth and laminated cotton are not required, and extensive training will be available.

You can work here at Modern June or in your own studio. This is a part time job that would bring in $400-$500 a month with room to increase your work load and earnings. We have much to do--this could become a nice full time job for the right person.

References and relevant Job History desired.
Production Payment: Per Piece or Percentage.
This will be a 1099 job.
Any time spent in training is paid hourly.
At home stitchers will need a large cutting table and a heavy duty sewing machine with a Teflon or roller foot. An industrial sewing machine is preferred.

Position#2: Cutter

Are you a list making person that likes to work in a creative environment? We are looking for a energetic and well organized fabric cutter to help us process orders and keep our fabric inventory well kept. Sewing skills are nice, but not required. Stitchers would have great room for advancement.

Pay: Hourly
Days: Tuesday and Friday (occasional 3rd day as needed)
Hours: 5-7 hour shifts, exact time TBD
Great part-time job for a stay-at-home-mom with school aged kids!!!
Cutters responsibilities:

Using Etsy.com to create "job lists" to be shared via Google Docs
Gather job material bolts from shed
Cut fabric
Stack fold and fluff product
Tag and bag = place in appropriate package WITH invoice Inventory

A: Yes!! Oilcloth is perfect for parties. The best thing is that you don't have to hem oilcloth, it doesn't fray. Quick, easy, and fun!! You can get fancy with a pair of pinking shears to use my Chalk Cloth Runner pattern to create a scalloped edge.

Great Idea: Chalk Cloth Tags Times Two

You know I am huge fan of the chalk cloth tag all you need is a fat quarter of chalk cloth and your golden. I've made a few in my time and we've got a few tutorials here on our blog, ovals and ornaments!! And, there's a fun one in my book, Sewing with Oilcloth! Today I found two more to add in to the crafty mix! My Very Educated Mother shares not one but two versions to get busy with.

I like this one a lot, it's a fun no-sew project. We love those, don't we? MVEM uses Mod Podge to glue the felt to the back of the chalk cloth. Keep in mind, this won't work when attempting to glue chalk cloth to oilcloth or to another layer of chalk cloth. I've never met a glue that would adhere the two together. The felt works because it will allow the glue to dry. Cleaver!!! I am so getting out some Mod Podge and some scraps of cotton and felt tomorrow and trying this out!!!!

Wondering how things are progressing in the Modern June and Oilcloth Addict studio?

Well... It's coming along, slowly but surely! As of yesterday we have a wonderful Swiss cheese ceiling that reminds me of a Dr. Who set. I am happy that we will soon have some very good lighting in the near future.

I've gone back and blogged about the reno's progress over at the Modern June blog.

As you can see things are not at all ready for us to open back up. Oh how I wish I could give an exact day-- it really kills me not knowing. I asked the contractor to be out of the studio by the end of November but we shall see if that is really possible. After all, there is still a major holiday between now that then and things are what they are.

Where did all the fabric go?

Some of you may remember that we lost a hundred year old tree back in August when Hurricane Irene decided to drop it on our house as she was leaving town. We are just now getting out house and studio repaired. Above are our 4 contractors up on the the studio roof, this was the day the removed the chimney. That was a VERY stressful day, let me tell you!

Up until now we've been able to deal with the damage and stay open. We've cranked up the space heaters to fight the wind that has been coming through the roof line. We've even lugged oilcloth up a step latter for a week or two. We cringed while the chimney bricks fell on the roof above us for an entire day.

My friend Kathie, the Junie Shipping Goddess of Love has a saying, "You can't keep a good Junie down!" We'll... We've discovered that even good Junies have limits!

Starting tomorrow the guys will be coming inside to work in the studio, dining room and kitchen to repair the ceilings and plaster walls. They will also be ripping off the roof to the studio. Fun. As you can imagine this is a total pain, just when we want to be thinking of the holidays, just at the busiest time of year!!!

Because of this construction work I have had to completely empty out the studio and most of our home. No studio means not cutting table. Heck, we don't even have a printer right now. Please don't fret, the guys know we need to open back up ASAP! We hope for good weather and no surprises!!! When we open back up I will have a few new laminated cottons to share with you all. The fabric that I bought at Quilt Market has started to come in, I know you'll love it all!! Hint... little boy prints!!!

Oilcloth Addict on the road!!

I can't even tell you what it's like to cut fabric out in the open! Just ask my friends Trish, Lydia, Kirsten, Suzanne and Tiffin, they know all too well that's it's totally crazy and super fun. These 5 ladies cut up a ton of my slick fabric in Columbus and Atlanta.

I have to say that it's pretty hard when it's freezing cold in the morning and your hands don't work and the oilcloth is hard. But the crowd is totally awesome and helping all those people as they go ga-ga over oilcloth, chalk cloth and laminated cotton is such fun!!!

I love that there is a show where Modern June meets Oilcloth Addict. That I can do that at the Country Living Fair is such an honor. I really do love what I do and I love sharing it with people that really get it. The CL readers rock my world!!!

The Country Living Fair in Columbus cutting table was located under the prettiest tree in the park!!!

Lydia swore she cut 50 yards of oilcloth on Friday alone. That girl can work her tail off and look super cute while doing it.

The best thing about having a cutting table at a show is having a place to do demos.

Sewing with Oilcloth Blog Tour Day 3!!

Happy Sewing with Oilcloth Blog Tour Day 3 to you all! We've needed to switch things up a little this week. I'll be filling in for Sew Mama Sew today, while they await their copies of the book. (Silly shipping company!!)

In a perfect world an 80 year old tree won’t have dropped on my home on Saturday, I would have internet, and this post would have already been up this morning. I am sorry for the delay, I hate making you all wait.

Today, I wanted to share a few things I did to keep organized and on schedule while I wrote this book. (Of course we can't for get the giveaway! See below for the details.)

MY MOOD BOARD

I used this louvered door in my studio as my Sewing with Oilcloth mood board for months. It helped me keep track of which projects I had finished and which ones needed doing. It also helped me create a balance with fabrics prints and colors. I wanted this book to be a very pretty book with lots of bright and interesting colors.

As I look at it now I see that a few samples changed in the end. One reason for the changes was the editing process. I had the pleasure of working with a great team of editors at Wiley. Some of the these talented ladies tweaked my copy and some the patterns themselves. We also had a team of testers give some of the patterns a go, and we then made any necessary changes.

A few projects changed fabrics because we received new prints in. I wanted to show you all the latest and greatest designer laminates and my new favorite oilcloth in the book. I know how easy it is to fall in love with a fabric, and you will be able to come to the Oilcloth Addict shop and buy exactly what you saw in the book.

MY TRUSTY FILE SUITCASE!

If you were to see me in a coffee shop, library or book store between November 2010 and April 2011, you would have seen me with my trusty Mac Book Pro and this file folder. Within the folders I kept copies of swatches, patterns and print outs for each project.

I also kept any photos that inspired that particular project. Sometimes it was a magazine layout with a great color combination, or a cool hand bag with a great flap. You never know where you’ll find inspiration. It’s fun to take a bit of this and bit of that to create something fresh and new.

I hope you all enjoyed this silly little peak behind the scenes.

We're still here...

As you all know, Hurricane Irene was a mighty storm that raged her way up the East Coast. On her way out of Richmond, she decided to drop a tree on our home and the Oilcloth Addict/Modern June studio. My family and I are totally and completely fine! Totally numb on Sunday, and filled with anxiety and tears on Monday. This morning finds me hopeful one minute and filled with butterflies the next.

Thanks to the big burly men at Altman Contracting, LLC. we are feeling much better! They worked a full 12 hour day getting the tree off our house and then covered it with a big tarp (in the dark) so last nights shower wouldn't do more damage to our ailing roof and attic.

Thankfully the tree didn't come through the studio roof, and that the trees root ball didn't damage the shed where we store most of our material. What a relief!

Soo... What's next? I guess we go back to work today, thanks to Kathie!! I'm kind of a mess but she'll come in and cut and wrap up your orders. She'll have to take them to her house to print shipping labels until our internet services are back. This should only cause a slight delay for you all.

I hope my fellow East Coast peeps are all well and have power ASAP!

Sewing with Oilcloth Arrives!

Let me tell you about my day. I got an message from Meghan, the photographer for Sewing with Oilcloth saying that she got a copy of our book. Totally exciting!!! Her kids are squealing with glee because they are there on the pages of a book. Tee hee!!! I love that. So I knew that the books were in Richmond!

So, I spent the rest of the afternoon waiting for Mr. UPS. I swept the porch, I watered all the plants, and I paced the sidewalks. Finally, around 2:30 I heard his big truck pull around the corner. I could have died when he stopped off at a neighbor's house first. Not today? Then he waves to me and gets back in the truck. Definitely not today!!! But he moves up two whole spaces and gives me my boxes. Really? You just had to move the truck 15 feet? Are you messing with me or what?

Mr UPS is thinking, "What could be so important that you have to take my photo?" He was happier for me (with me) once he knew what was inside the boxes!! Yay!!!

I am surprised I didn't cut myself I was shacking as I opened up the box!!!

Great Idea... Laminated Cotton Art Smock

Check out this great art smock that Tricia, Sweeter than Sweet, made for her little cutie! She used the Prudent Baby Art Smock tutorial, it only takes 1/2 yard of laminated cotton and a couple of packages of bias. She used her extra cotton laminate to make a little art mat. What a good mamma!

What a total cutie!!

I found this question in my inbox today and I think that it's the best question ever. I do have some ideas on what to do with oilcloth, twenty ideas in fact!!

Q: What can you do with oilcloth?

A: I have an entire book coming out about a month that will answer that for you. Sewing with Oilcloth is a pretty little book filled with 20 patterns with lovely pictures by Meghan McSweeney Photography. There is an entire chapter filled with tips, tools and trims that will make sewing with oilcloth fun and easy! The other 3 chapters have projects for you, for your home and for your little ones. There are projects of oilcloth, laminated cotton and chalk cloth.

There I was in the corner of my studio working away on emails with my back to the room. I hear Kathie, Junie-shipping-goddess-of-love and Oilcloth-Addict-yardage-cutter-of-happiness start singing. It started out as "row, row, row, you boat" but quickly ends up being "row, row, row, your bolts."

OMG, I knew she had lost it. I couldn't even turn around, I just sat there in a fit of giggles for a few minutes before I got up and grabbed my camera. This woman is hysterical, she cracks me up every single day!!! She's a Yankee in a very southern city, which makes her even funnier. I am a lucky girl!!

What you've got to understand it that our order are off the charts! And for that I thank you! Kathie on the other hand is a bit stressed. But don't worry about here, I've got cake for her today. At least our growing pains are filled with laughter and not tears!

It's a Yellowishus idea

Yellowishus? Oh yea, I made up a new word. (I do that, a lot) It's all about yellow here at Oilcloth Addict! I am just loving this new print, Big Apple Yellow!

You know what I am seeing? Placemats!! Check it out what I am calling a panel is 20 1/2" long and 47"/48" wide.

Then I cut the panel in to three smaller rectangles that are about 15" x 20 1/2" each. You could now trim them up to the same size and you have a great single-sided placemat or you could really crafty and follow the How-To: Outdoor Placemats by Lish Dorset to make a reversible placemat. (see photo below)

Here is the tricky part, one yard won't give you enough for more than 3 placemats but 1 1/2 will get you 6 placemats. Feel free to convo me for a special placemat listing and I'll make sure you get the right amount.

Round Up: Oilcloth Covered Tables

I spend a lot of time searching my own blog for information so I know you must get really frustrated. So in an attempt to fix this I am creating Project Round Ups for the top projects I've featured on my blog. There are Show and Tell, Great Idea, Q and A, I spy Oilcloth features along with my own projects all corralled by subject.

I'll start with the oilcloth covered table's that I've featured.

Here's the lovely oilcloth cover table project from Farm Chicks book, Farm Chicks in the Kitchen. You can find the How To here. Serena used a heavy duty hand held stapler to attach the oilcloth to the table, much like I covered this bench.

Elyse's oilcloth covered kitchen tablecloth is applied to the table with painters tape. She's a mom with two active boys and this technique lasted two years, when she switched from red polka dotted to white dots on red. Elyse also has a very lovely Etsy shop called Tinkered Treasures

Elyse's oilcloth covered kitchen tablecloth and her lovely home are were featured in Fresh Cottage magazine.

Elyse's done it again, this time she's got a bit bolder with the dots on red print.

This one comes from a fellow homeschooling mom, Jessica has saved an abused table by covering it with black and white gingham oilcloth. How great is her at home school?

TART LAMINATED COTTON

Anna Maria Horner fabric is always a treat but I couldn't have believed that we could sell out of this pretty Lou Lou Thi, Tart laminated cotton in just one weeks time. I quickly ordered two bolts, which I received them yesterday. After cutting the pre-orders we took at Oilcloth Addict and the laminated cotton tablecloths for Modern June we have nearly emptied a 15 yard bolt in about 36 hours. So come on over and grab up, it's a hot commodity!!!

Q & A: Oilcloth vs. Laminated Cotton vs. Chalkcloth (TM)

Inquiring minds want to know... what's the difference between oilcloth and laminated cotton? A lot and not much all. Confused? Let's break it down:

Laminated cotton is a high quality cotton sheeting with a thin layer of polyurethane film adhered to the right side of the fabric. It's soft and has a very nice hand to it, it drapes very nicely and it even does gathers well!

Q: Can you use the laminated cotton for reusable snack bags?

A: Laminated cottons are waterproof and easy to clean so it's a great choice for snack bags. According to the test results that I received from Westminster Fibers, Inc ALL of the laminated cottons that I carry have been tested and proved to be be BPA and PVC free. These are the chemicals that we don't want leaching in to our sandwiches. Which is why I don't recommend using oilcloth for projects that store food. While many people feel comfortable with knowing that the fabric is PVC and BPA-free every person has to make the decision that's right for them.

Laminated cotton has a thin layer of polyurethane on the right side of the fabric only so you will want to line your snack bags with another layer of laminated cotton. I recommend leaving the lining loose so you can slid it out and clean it thoroughly. I also recommend hand washing any laminated cotton project, as water gets trapped between the layers of laminated cotton and has a really hard time drying out properly. We now sell laminated cotton in Fat Quarters, it's the perfect size for snack bags!

UPDATE: I contacted Westminster Fibers, INC to see if they had run this fabric through testing to see if it was "food safe" and they haven't tested it and don't have plans to. So I can't say for sure that it is or isn't food safe.

I can say that it is PVC and BPA free. From what I have read this is good indication, but of course I am NOT a scientist and I don't even play on TV. ; )

As with all the big questions in life we have to educate ourselves and do what's right for us and our families.

Hope this helps. I really wish I could give a concrete answer. I really do. : ) I'll keep asking the hard questions to these company and hopefully someday we'll get an answer.

How to care for your laminated cotton.

The Sis Boom Blue Paisley laminated cotton fabric on the right side has been machine washed and line dried.

So you've fallen hard for all the new laminated cottons, who could blame you? Now you're imagining all the baby bibs, barons and splat mats that your going to make for the next baby shower. Your saving your favorite print for a new dining room tablecloth and a coordinating apron to keep you clean and dry while you doing the dishes! I hear ya, I am right there with you.

So, let's talk about cleaning up all those pretty projects. The manufacturer says that the laminated cottons are machine washable in cold water and that you can tumble dry on low. For the most part, I agree with those care instructions.

I have washed and dried laminated cotton a few times to see how it holds up. The laminate's have washed up nicely but I prefer to line dry my projects to lesson wrinkling. I have found that the texture of the laminated cotton changes a bit with washing but other than that it's a great way to clean up smaller projects like baby bibs or changing mats. Let's face it NO ONE wants to hand wash either one of those messy things.

But when it comes to the larger projects like tablecloths I suggest that you just wipe then down with a damp cloth and a gentle spray. I haven't and wouldn't machine wash one of my tablecloths. The twisting action of the washer, even on the hand wash cycle is just too twisty for large items. Machine washing them would cause them to wrinkle. I'm happy to report that my very first laminated cotton has been happily wiped down with a damp cloth for over 3 years.

UPDATE: I forgot to mention a few thing about storage. You'll want to keep your big projects rolled between uses and you'll want to hang the smaller ones up. Folding will result in those pesky wrinkles.

Tricky Bench Tutorial

A few months ago I whipped up a little something to help brighten up a corner of our dining room.

As you can clearly see our yard sale bench as seen better days. The upholstery weight remnant just didn't hold up to the chalk dust that our Chalkcloth (TM) board generates, so it was oilcloth to the rescue.

I armed myself with a 1/2 yard of red apple oilcloth, a pair of scissors and a staple gun to quickly give the bench a facelift.

As you can see my bench has a series of convex and concave curves so it was a little tricky getting oilcloth to behave.

I needed to make slits at the concave curves so the oilcloth would give in and spread apart.

Then I created little pinch pleats on the convex curves.

A series for pleats and folds keep the corners clean. Once you have one side of the corner fold it up and staple it into place.

Fold up the second half of the corner and keep it in place with a few more staples, I had to give them a whack with hammer to get them all the way in.

I was screwing the seat back onto the bench in less than 10 minutes! That's my kind of do-over, quick and easy!

Now when there's a ton of chalk dust on the bench after a long day of homeschooling, I just grab a wet dishcloth and whip it down and it's as good as new! Check out how to make a chalk cloth board out of a reclaimed piece of plywood we had laying around.

I've divided them into SCRAP PACKS, all 6 flat rate envelopes each contains 1 1/2 pounds of oilcloth scrape and a role of Chalkcloth (TM) that measures 7" x 20" or an equal amount of chalk cloth pieces. Color Check: Angle Wings

This morning Dana asked me to describe the spicy red color in the Angle Wing laminated cotton from Ty Pennington's Impressions fabric collection. Color description can be so subjective so I decide it was best to raid my kitchen to help convey the color. I found that the Angle Wings is very close to an early season tomato and fresh ground paprika.

When it comes to investing in an large amount of fabric trusting the monitor for colors can be a bit risky. Here's another great tutorial that would be great made out of laminated cotton. Christina from Two Little Hooligans, made a fun little beach comber bags that are great for corralling all of your pool and beach bottles. I'll be making a couple of these for our family vacay in September!

Cristina's tutorial uses 2-3 fat quarters, so I thought it was a great time to make a listing for laminated cotton fat quarters, because sometimes you only need a little bit to get the job done!

Show and Tell: Tablecloth trick gets center stage

How darn cute is this kitchen?! You may remember it from Elyse's oilcloth covered kitchen tablecloth from our first Show and Tell features. Well now you can see her practically pretty table and more of her lovely home in this months Fresh Cottage magazine. I can't wait to hit Barnes and Noble today to pick up my copy.

She transformed her table with the red polka dot oilcloth in about 15 minutes with nothing more than a pair of scissor and a ~~staple gun~~. Actually, she just uses blue painters tape. What really surprised me is that she feeds two boys at this table and painters tape kept the oilcloth in place for about a year. Totally cool!

Show and Tell: One yard wonder!

Look what Amanda did with one yard of oilcloth!!! She used the pink forever oilcloth and transformed the chairs that she bought for just $1 each. She spray painted them and cut new boards for the seats and then covered with oilcloth.

Then she used the remaining fabric to create two oilcloth pillows. She did all this with just one yard, I say that's a brilliant way to spend $8.00!

I needed a web ad for Craftiness is not Optional blog that I blogged about a couple of weeks ago, your remember the super cute Bapron! I knew the hubby was just too busy, so I figured how hard could it be?

I purchased the fancy decorative frames from Pixal Paper's Etsy shop and layered them on top of the Red Fruity wall paper that Don used for the all of our other OCA branding. I love it, even if Don says it not on "brand." But hey, it's done and it's pretty! I'll change the fonts later and it'll be even better. By the way, did you ever here the ending of the shoe makers son story? Well, the son gets to tired of being barefoot he starts making his own shoes!!! ; )

I love, love, love this idea that was recently featured on Craft Gossip. Lorajean's Picnic Basket Tutorial reminded me of something similar that was in the Home Girl booth at the Ohio Country Living Fair. (see last photo) I love a bushel basket all by it's fun little self but add a liner and I could die! Don't you think that laminated cotton would be a perfect fabric for this project?

Laminated cotton is softer and more supple than the oilcloth so it can handle the gathers in Lorajean's wonderful tutorial with ease! (Pun intended!) Plus it's waterproof so it's easy clean up, just wipe clean and hang out to dry.

Home Girls, Country Living Fair 2010

The intended use for the original project was for a picnic basket, which is just as cute as it could possibly be, but I could see this being a great project basket. You could store all the bits and pieces for a single project in basket, the handy pockets would keep everything in it's place. I am thinking this would be a great way to store the two crazy crocheted afghans I've been working on. Unfortunately, I've been working on them for about a 100 years and they're both still small enough to fit in a bushel basket.

Cool Tools: Scalloped Fabric Scissors

Here's a little pair of scissors that I've been dying to get my hands on! I've been looking for a pair of scalloped scissors that would work on fabric for a couple of years and I finally found them.

You know how it goes, you see some great crafter (Linwood Avenue) promoted on a site like Design Sponge, so you go to her website and click around until you find a link to another cool crafter (mmmcraft). Then your clicking and reading all the good stuff she have to say and then you find it, something that you want, need and have to have! So your off to some other website that sells cool toys (tool-tron), I mean tools. And that's how I found the scissors I've been dreaming of!

What do I want to use them for? Laminated cotton of course! I think that these would be so great to use for quick and fun projects. Just think about how cute a little laminated cotton tablecloth would be with the hem line cute in a tiny little scallop. Just perfect for summer dining alfesco!!!

By the way, we've got 4 new laminated cottons coming in tomorrow so come on back to see all the goodies!!! Off to buy my scissors of scalloped love.

Our newest oilcloth addict, Jill, recently bought two 1/2 yard cuts of oilcloth and made herself a great reversible tote. Oilcloth makes a wonderful summer tote -- think farmers markets and trips to the beach! She loved her project so much she's back and looking for more great combos. Red and Yellow Fruity oilcloth's are great with all the reds, both gingham and dots! The navy gingham is really great too! Blue forever is wonderful with the reds too.

Blue hibiscus is great with the yellow gingham and it works with all the red prints as well.
Pink lace and pink polka dots great too!
Zoya Lime looks great with the pink dot, gingham and lace. I love the Zoya with the yellow gingham too.

My lovely tablecloth is made from the green lattice laminate from Sisboom

We are gearing up to makeover our studio space and I've been blogging about it on my Modern June blog for a couple of weeks now. This piece of the puzzle is to help us get your laminated cotton and chalk cloth orders to you in nicely wrapped rolls, so I thought I would share it here on OCA too!

OOOOOOKKKKKKKKK! That's a really big roll of poly tubing...

Kathie (Shipping Junie of Love... yes, that is her official title) and I have been dreaming of the day when we can ship our chalk cloth goodies and our rolls of chalk cloth and laminated cotton more efficiently. For years we've been cutting down Uline's long poly mailers. We've cut them lengthways and widthways, so that we cut down on waste and costs. They cost us $1.70 a pop, so getting four packages out of one mailer was good business. We've also reused the poly tubing that the bolts came it. Often splitting them in half. It wasn't pretty, but it got the job done cheaply.

I started squirreling away a few dollars here and there to buy a big roll of poly tubing. I figured that we needed to have it on hand before we made over the studio so we could plan on where to put it. HOLY COW, was I right about that! This bad boy is gigantic! I placed my MacBook in the shot so you had an idea of just how big this thing is.

Well, we had planned on attaching it to the wall that the cutting table butts up on to but I don't think that's such a great idea. Mr. Modern June would have a total fit about that!!! Officially, I am not allowed to hang things on the wall. It's not because I am girl, it's just that I really suck at it. ; ) Heck, I doubted that the rack would really stand up once the roll was put on. Engineering is cool, just like magic!

Who knows where this will end up! Stay tuned...

Color Combo's: Picnic Time

The other day I had to pull out these four oilcloth prints for a few different orders. As I was carrying them to the cutting table and couldn't help but think that they would be great used together. I soon came up with images of having a picnics outside my imaginary and quaint cabin by the make-believe lake. (Of course there's a dock and a row boat along the grassy shore.)

Ahhh....sounds lovely doesn't it? I can see an oilcloth picnic mat made with the red gingham that is sprinkled with cherry appliques now! And a vintage picnic basket is lined with all four prints! Summer! All I need is the cabin and the lake...

I know I say this over and over, but I really mean it! Laminated Cotton ROCKS!! And Jennifer Pagnelli from Sis Boom just adds to that love! These prints are to-die-for-yummy-laminated-cotton-goodness.

My Junies and I just can't decide what to make first with these pretty and luscious prints. They are really soft and supple, so I am thinking I need a green and white raincoat!!! Nicole took home a yard of each to make some of her Nicole Lee Designs Urbana Bags. Kathie can't wait to here hands on one!

Q & A: Laminated Cotton as table cloth

Q: I think this would be an amazing craft service tablecloth! I was wondering what the edges look like on the sides (of the laminated cotton). Are they finished?

A: Your right, laminated cotton would be a great craft service tablecloth. It cleans up well, it's waterproof, it's wider than oilcloth (54"/55") and every single print is to die for!! Laminated cotton has selvedge edges just like a regular cotton fabric, but if you just cut it off with a regular pair of scissors (pinking shears would be great too) you'd be set.

Use a ruler and a pencil to create straight lines and square corners and then cut out your pretty new tablecloth. Laminated Cotton doesn't fray or curl up on the ends so you really don't need to hem or trim it. It's great if your in a rush or not sewing-inclined.

We ship our laminated cotton yardage on a roll to avoid wrinkles, I suggest rolling your tablecloth between jobs so you'll always have a pretty table setting.

On another note: Like the new print? It's from Jennifer Pagenellie's (AKA Sis Boom) Honey Child fabric line. It's really dreamy. We'll be receiving this and two more coordinates in just a few days time!! I love me some pretty new laminated cotton, don't you?

Q & A: Threads

From time to time I get some really great questions! Here is another good one from Rosies!

Question: What type of thread do you suggest for laminated cotton? Oilcloth? (and chalk cloth)

Answer: Any old all-purpose thread that you have laying around will work. If you're going out to buy new thread for your project, I recommend that you go with Gutterman. Coats and Clark is fine, but if you sew for a living (like all day, everyday), I have found that Coats and Clark can make your machine a little linty. Sometimes the color and the price of Coats and Clark is just too good to pass up though, so I'll get that in a pinch.

OCA Sewing Tip: Top stitching with Teflon Presser Feet

I bought a Teflon presser foot for a photoshoot for my upcoming book, S ewing with Oilcloth, that's due out in August. So, when I was making a laminated cotton apron the other day, I was pleased to have this on hand. I've always just made due with my roller foot, but let me tell you this bad boy was worth all $48 of the precious dollars that it cost me (Bernina presser feet always cost a fortune, but not every company has such high prices for specialty feet).

Top stitching a pocket onto my laminated cotton apron was a totally breeze once I switched feet. Laminated Cotton has a tendency to get caught up under a normal presser foot or a roller foot--because of this I've ended up with little pinches and tiny pleats in my past attempts at top stitching (not pretty, not acceptable!). If you don't have a fancy Teflon Foot and don't want to invest in one, try out the tape trick, it helps a lot!!!

The 411 on Laminated Cotton

What is Laminated Cotton?
It is a hot new fabric--it’s a friendly material that makes fabulous tablecloths and splat mats. Because it’s BPA-free, PVC-free and it's CPSIA compliant and great for family use. Laminated cotton is a thinner and more supple oilcloth that is a high-quality quilting-weight cotton print, coated with a thin layer of polyurethane on the fabric’s right side.

What's it used for?
It's great to use for snack bags, lunch sacks, baby bibs, splat mats, diaper covers, rain coats, purses, shower curtains, placemats, aprons, and tablecloths. It's water proof, easy to clean and hard wearing so it's great for many applications.

How do I work with it?
Laminated Cotton pretty easy to work with. A regular sewing machine, thread and needle is all that is required. If you have a fancy Teflon or roller foot handy you'll want to use that for any top stitching, if not just use out tape tip instead. Laminated Cotton Pastry Mat

As you may have noticed, I haven't done a tutorial for you all in ages. I've been so busy with my upcoming book, Sewing with Oilcloth, and all my new creative efforts have been a bit top-secret.

But don't fret, I found a really quick project to share. A few weeks ago a customer asked me if oilcloth would be good to use as a pastry mat, my answer is no, not oilcloth but what about laminated cotton?

The idea lead me to go back and ask good people at Freespirit and Westminster Fabrics if they had tested their laminated cottons for food safety yet. ~~Well, the answer was yes, it has been tested and it is food safe. What great news is that?? When I asked the same question last May the answer wasn't available, so I was thrilled to get this news.~~

CORRECTION: After having a discussion about the food safe fabrics with another blogger I contacted the good people at Westminter and Freespririt fabrics and asked for tangible proof that laminated cotton is indeed food safe. Unfortunately the company hasn't tested the fabric for "food safety" at this time and makes no claim that the laminated cotton is food safe. They did apologize for any misinformation previously given.

So let's talk turkey, no one's saying that it's not food safe, it just hasn't been tested. Please know that I strive to give you all the latest news about such things, if I hear more on this issue I'll be sure to give you all the facts.

Like everything in life, educate yourself and make the best decision for your family.

The fabric Westiminster company sent me the lab results proving that their laminated cotton is BPA-free. I'll be contacting them for the PVC test result and to confirm that the laminated fabric is CPSIA compliment as I understand it to be.

Back to this super simple project! I had forgotten about the mat idea until I was about to make heart-shaped pizza's for Valentines Day. The last time I made dough I through away my Tupperware dough mat because it was totally gross and melted from a little cookie pan incident! Well, I ran into the Modern June studio and whipped up a new dough mat out of the Heather Bailey, Hop Dot laminate!

I literally made this in less than 10 minutes!

Materials:
2/3 yards of laminated cotton
Wide ruler or square
pencil
glue stick (my new found BFF)
Pinking shears or a fancy rotary cutter and mat
matching thread

Step 1: On the back of your fabric use your wide ruler or square to draw two 24" squares.

Step 2: Cut out your squares using your pinking shears or rotary cutter and mat. I used a rotary cutter with a crimped edge. (note: a really sharp blade is best when cutting the laminated cotton, it's a bit tricky to cut with a dull blade)

Step 3: Use a glue stick instead of pins to bring the two layers of laminated cotton wrong sides together. A thin layer of glue along the stitch like was all it took to keep the two pieces together.

Step 4: Using a 1/2" seam allowance stitch the mat closed on all four sides. If you have a roller or teflon foot handy use that to keep the laminated side of the fabric from sticking to your foot. If you don't have a fancy foot, no worries click here for our tape tip. As for needles, we used to suggest a microtex needle but we have found that an nice new all-purpose needle will do you just fine!

Step 5: All that is left is to start baking! To get you laminated mat to stick to your counter just use a use a clean dishcloth to dampen your counter before you lay it down. To clean it up, just whip it down with a soapy dishcloth and air dry. I told you its easy-peasy and super pretty.

Check out Jenny's Craft Service (catering) table in the picture to the right. All this lovely food fed hardworking people while they made a commercial for Toyota. I was lucky to spend a good part of my 20's working of movie sets, and I must say, there was never this pretty of a display to be seen!

Q & A: Oilcloth as a BBQ Cover

Question: I have been toying with using oilcloth for a BBQ cover in the winter. Are you aware of pros/cons? How does oilcloth differ from a tarp or vinyl in this regard?

Answer: I use an oilcloth cover, and I must say it didn't look pretty for long! I made it in the summer of '09. As you can see in the picture, I used the cherry print on white. Over the first winter it became moldy and faded. I can, and have, scrubbed it clean but it's still a faded mess. On a positive note, it's still weather proof, which is why I am still using it.

I've been toying with the idea of using a sunbrella fabric, flat lined with a thin clear vinyl. That way I get a fun print and it'll still be waterproof.

Q & A: Covering chair cushions with laminated cotton

Question: I am considering re-doing some old chairs that currently have oilcloth on their seats. They would be used in a very active kitchen (which includes three kids). How would cotton laminate hold up as opposed to oilcloth?

Kelly: While laminated cotton is not as thick as oilcloth, I do think that it will work. It's thin and supple, but it's still strong. I think it would last longer than if you were to use a medium weight cotton fabric.

If I were to try this, I would add a layer of fusible interfacing. I've had some luck using fusible Heat Bond on the back of laminated cotton. You need to use a dry iron, set on medium heat, and be sure to use a press cloth or the laminate will melt!! The interfacing would increase the longevity of the cotton laminate for use as seat cushions.

Oilcloth is a great fabric for covering seats, but laminated cottons have a different design aesthetic and compliment certain decors better than the kitschy oilcloth prints.

I am a big fan of going with the unexpected when it comes to easy projects like seat covers, and I like to change things every couple of years. I don't think you'd be unhappy if you used the laminated cotton.

How to make old school oilcloth!

As I poured through pages and pages of oilcloth facts for my books introduction I found this great exert from Catharine Beecher and Harriet Beecher Stowe’s The American Woman’s Home, or Principles of Domestic Science (1869). The book is classic take on home ec, the famous sisters introduce the vision of the kitchen as the core of the home. With in the book they suggest using oilcloth for such things as shelves, drawers, and room dividers and of course on the floor.

Here's the 411 on how to make old school oilcloth... “To procure a kitchen oilcloth as cheaply as possible, buy cheap tow cloth and fit it to the size and shape of the kitchen. Then have it stretched and nailed to the south side of the barn and, with a brush, cover it with a coat of thin rye plaster. When this is dry, put on a coat of yellow paint and let it dry for a fortnight. Then put on a second coat.” (Harrison, 1972, 126) The handbook suggests that the oilcloth maker let's it dry for 2 months to make it last for years.

I don't know about you but but since I don't have a barn I think I am good with the ready-made stuff!

The weather outside is seriously dreadful and I am all about hanging out in my bed as much as possible. So, here I am, surrounded with a pile of my favorite craft books, in my favorite jammies, in my super comfy bed!

I've turned in all 20 projects for my book and now I have to write an introduction, with a dedication and acknowledgments. I've been stalling on this part--it kind of makes it all real, so I'm turning to my crafty-crushes to inspire me.

Ironing Laminated Cotton

I've been working with the new laminated cottons a lot lately and I've picked up some handy tips along the way. I've read about people worried a ironing laminated cotton, but don't fret it can be done if you take the right precautions.

The Basics:

Iron on the wrong side whenever possible.
Never let your iron touch the thin layer of BPA and PVC-free plastic.
Use a low temp iron.
Skip the steam.
Always use a press cloth.

A bit more info on the press cloth... I prefer a clean cotton white flour sack tea towel, their large size is wonderful and they are thin enough to see your project through the cotton. If your project sifts out of place you'll be able to see. I usually use two at a time, one to cover the ironing board and the second one to layer between my project and the iron. Ideally you’ll want to press the laminated cotton from the wrong side of the fabric, but there are times when you’ll need to press on the right side and in this instance using a press cloth is a MUST.

Boys need laminated cotton too, so "Letters" in blue is for all the boy mammas!

I've loved this print for a while now, it's so playful. I am so glad to be getting more of Anna Maria Horner fabric for the shops.

I love-love-love these Heather Bailey prints. I've used them for two projects in my upcoming book, Sewing with Oilcloth, I am sure you'll love them too!

Last but not least, we'll have a brand new fabric line from Dena Designs called Tea Garden! I think this will be so lovely for winter projects, the colors are so rich and the prints so pleasing.

We are hoping that these will arrive around the first of the month, please check back soon. Meanwhile, Happy Turkey Day!

It was a happy mistake that lead me to my latest faux bois oilcloth print. We accidentally received a bolt of Rosewood Faux Bois instead of Walnut Faux Bois and I couldn't be happier to add this to our lineup!!

It works so well with the brown gingham oilcloth.

This week we will be traveling to our second Country Living Fair, in Atlanta, Georgia! Selling pre-cut oilcloth in Ohio was a big success but people wanted more and sometimes less of what we had to offer, so we decided to improve the situation and cut oilcloth orders at the show. We'll still have our pre-cut pieces for quick sell, we will be loading up our oilcloth lined Ya-Ya cart with 1, 2 and 3 yard cuts. (Want to know how to make a rolling shopping cart liner, just hold on, I'll be making a pattern for this bad girl of a project soon!!!)

Not only will we be selling our Modern June wares and our Oilcloth Addict yardage at the show I'll also be a guest speaker at the Atlanta Country Living Fair. On Sunday October 24th. I will be chatting about how to use oilcloth to decorate the home, "Oilcloth for the Modern Home" will start at noon. See ya at the booth and then again on the Main Stage!
